Self Knowledge
Distill Your Purpose
As a leader knowing your why is foundational. It is something you can lean on in difficult times. I find that knowing your why and continuing to return to this serves as a North Star in making difficult decisions, weighing priorities, and living a life of integrity.
Take the time to distill your purpose as a human and as a leader. They can be the same.
I personally have one for each – which are very similar one just speaks more to the service aspect of my life and one speaks more to my simple presence. Some would say one is more outward (masculine) and one is more inwardly focused (feminine).
A distilled and clear why is best articulated in 10 words or less, 5- 7 is ideal Keeping it short allows you to distill it to the core essence. Your Why or Purpose may have many different expressions (Missions and Visions) yet what is the core essence?
Reflect on Your Needs, Desires, and Potential Biases
Knowing your needs, desires, and biases as a leader is a key component. These are the human parts of our self that are always there as we move, live, breathe, and lead.
A level of awareness around this creates a solid foundation for intentional relating.
At a core level knowing our basic needs as a leader from basic physical needs (ie sleep, nutrition) to psychological and emotional safety needs cultivates the self-knowledge necessary to move in the world with intention.
Building on top of this knowing your desires and biases can provide a set point to understand the lens in which you view the world. Taking the time to reflect on this allows you to begin to create inner alignment and become present to hidden beliefs or outdated desires that no longer serve you.
Our inner desires and biases color how we see ourselves, the world, and a situation. Some desires have been layered on out of fear, societal pressures, or a seeming need. Checking in and getting clear on your true desires is a liberating gift.
This self-reflective practice also begins to provide a 360, full-color view of life helping to shift out of black-and-white thinking, and beyond the gray.
Shadow Work and Integration
This can take deliberate practice and time for some. It requires an awareness that may require slowing down or pausing to reflect, process, and integrate.
Trust and know that a level of awareness will become more natural. Of course, there will still need to be moments for pause and reflection, yet they will feel overall more integrated into your process.
