The Great Unmasking: Sacred Union with the Feminine
Intro
I sat in a mildly comfortable chair across, resisting the urge to fidget, and attempting to call on the deep breaths I’d learned in yoga. My research advisor, was quiet and pensive as he reviewed my work since our last meeting.
As great of a guy that he was I was thoroughly intimidated by him. He was chair of one of the greatest engineering departments in the world, a well-established leader in his area of research, and extremely brilliant in a chill kind of way.
He broke his silence, looked up at me, and made a comment, of which I have no recollection.
I tried to hold them back, I’d been succeeding for weeks but today – the tears began rolling down my eyes, in abundance.
The level of shock in my inability to hold back my tears was just as surprising to me as I am sure it was to him. Honestly, he played it super cool – it made me think I wasn’t the first graduate student who sat across from him and shed tears.
I judged myself for being too emotional, unprofessional, and just all-around sucking at life. Catastrophizing was a normal part of my self-talk and inner ‘motivation’ at this stage of my journey.
Turning the Keys of Motivation
Not until a therapy session years later did I consciously realize that this intense self-judgment which I had grown fond of as a form of motivation was not only harmful it was not a necessary key to success.
I’ll admit it did yield great external results in my younger years but to what cost?
With time and perspective, I was able to look back at my early 20s self with love and care and realize how overwhelmed, exhausted, and in a constant state of crisis I was during those years.
Unpacking and releasing the energetic, behavioral, and thought patterns that had been a regular part of my experience I was faced with where my ‘drive’ came from.
Unlatching from the perpetual need to succeed and perform for an overall sense of worth and purpose left me feeling numb in the beginning. I no longer felt the need to rely on ‘looking good’ for cues for how to be or perform.
Which led to a significant decrease in ambition. I’m almost ashamed to share that but it’s true. A large part of my identity was interwoven with my ambitions.
Learning to Look Within (Healing the Feminine)
I hadn’t quite cultivated the self-trust to look within at my true wants and desires.
If I am being honest up until then because of the level of masking I had been doing, I’d learned to ignore and suppress my instincts.
Just before this pivotal shift in motivation, I’d begun learning more about feminine energy. I discuss this further in the first episode of the Healing the Feminine podcast.
I’d been learning to source from within which created a strong sense of inner peace and effortless joy.
Yet along with this came a disassociation from the rat race of American capitalism, also removing my need to overwork, produce, and achieve as a form of validation.
I was left with this inner peace and joy that had me wondering if ambition was ever a true part of my personality.
This time led to several foundational shifts for me:
An awareness of my well-being. Understanding and acknowledging when I felt tired, overwhelmed, or simply hungry. As basic as these needs sound, I was such a workaholic these needs often went unmet and unfelt.
Ability to self-care properly. Along with this increased foundational awareness, I was able to learn to address and fulfill physical, emotional, and mental wants and needs before they became core health and safety issues. I also reversed stress-related medical conditions such as high blood pressure and anxiety disorder.
The ability to self-trust. Along with learning to listen to and meet core needs I cultivated the muscle of trusting that I know what’s best for me. This slowly but surely led to rediscovering, reconnecting with, and healing my relationship with my the masculine.
This is a phenomenon which I relate to as the reemergence of the Feminine. This is my story on a micro level and is the core shift we see happening in the world today.
A component we don’t discuss quite enough inside of the leadership space.
Signs of it are everywhere, as we become more integrated on an individual and societal level. We see it in the:
Increased emphasis on self-care and nourishment
Valuing the pause and the rest (for its own sake and as part of the process)
Looking within to transform outer experiences (alchemy)
Honoring the planet, Mother Earth, as we live, love, and produce (sustainability)
Reclaiming agency over our bodies, minds, and food
Dismantling and restructuring of exclusionary systems and power structures
Sacred Union
To be clear, I don’t see this as a feminine takeover – it’s never been about that.
The great shift as we transform as a planet is the recalibration of feminine energy alongside masculine in service to the evolution of humanity.
Many elements of the feminine were stripped away, especially in the age of colonialism and the Industrial Revolution. As she returns we get to heal and honor the parts of ourselves that were suppressed in learning to survive in a society that shamed this core part of ourselves.
In many ways, race, gender, and culture have worked to play roles in how this macro-level suppression of the feminine has played out for us on micro-levels. The human race is not a monolith.
What I do see is as a collective we crave a reconnection to and deeper understanding of this forever-present force in our lives. The evolution of humanity requires this sacred union of the inner workings of ourselves and reintegration.
This reintegration to me is a sacred embodiment and full expression of ourselves from the inside out.
